Pre-Master's Course
For entry to Master's programmes

The College offers a Pre-Master's course which gives students who do not fully meet the entry requirements for our master's programmes the opportunity to study for one semester to gain the skills, knowledge and English proficiency necessary for master's level study.

A pre-master's course is for you if:

l   your undergraduate qualifications do not meet the level required for postgraduate study.

l   you wish to take a master's in a subject that is different from your undergraduate degree

l   you need to improve your study skills and use of academic English.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements vary depending upon the Master’s route chosen, but will normally include a first degree or similar qualification.

Students require a minimum score of IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 520 (190 CBT) for entry to the programme although it is possible for those with a lower English language score to take an English course at the College prior to entry to the Pre-Master's course.

Acceptable qualifications

Some examples of acceptable qualifications for entry to the Pre-Masters programme are shown below. If your qualification is not listed then please contact us for advice

l   China: 2 or 3 Year College Graduation Diploma (Dazhuan)

l   Indonesia: Diploma 4/Sarjana (S1) course accredited with the British Council (Grade 2.5 or above GPA)

l   Japan: Bachelor (Gakushi)
l   Kazakhstan: Bakalavr (since 1991)
l   Kenya: Higher/Higher Technician Diploma
l   Kuwait: Bachelor Degree - Normally 4 year degree with Grade 3 or above (GPA)
l   Oman: 3 Year Higher/Advanced Diploma
l   South Korea: Bachelor (Haksa) Degree or 3 year Teacher's College (Junior College)
l   Russia: Bakalavr (since 1991)
l   Saudi Arabia: Bachelor Degree/Higher Diploma
l   Taiwan: Bachelor Degree or Junior College graduate from the 5 year programme

l   UAE: Higher College of Technology Higher Diploma (with high marks)

Subject Specialism

The subject specialism modules allow you to improve your knowledge of the subject you intend to study at master's level, and give you the experience in studying and working with British students. You are free to choose your subject modules from a wide range of options from the university’s undergraduate modular programme. Your choice will normally be made based on your interests and future field of study. Here are some of the more popular choices.

Additional classes

IELTS preparation is available as an additional class for an extra fee.

Assessment

Assessment for all modules is based on course work and/or a final examination. The pass mark for the Pre-Masters programme is 50%.
